My pal and good friend , Scampie

Scampie's Tribute by Diabella

Scampie was the first dog I had the pleasure of sharing my home with, and it was just by accident that it happened.

I was dog sitting for a friend of mine's sister one weekend - She brought over her female poodle and six puppies, and Scampie.

Scampie, they told me was a breeding dog.  "She was your dog, but they had the rights to breed her when they wanted."

Scampie and I fell in love at first sight. The girl who owned her couldn't believe it was the same dog. They said she used to snap, growl and nip. But not when I had her.  She was the friendliest, happiest, had a great disposition and was a very intelligent dog.  I say intelligent because she knew a good thing when she saw it. ME.

When my friend came to pick up the dogs, I told her that I didn't think her sister deserved Scampie. She agreed as she apparently "thought she was nasty and was going to return her anyway." That did it. She didn't get her back.

I made arrangements with the breeder and they said it was okay. Luckily, the breeding kennels changed owners shortly after, and the woman who took over was very willing for me to keep Scampie. She felt that the dog had gone through enough and wanted her to have a good home. So for $35 I got my beautiful Scampie. She was about three years old at this time.

At the present time, I can't find too many picture of the "old girl" but she lives in my heart and her face will never fade.

Here is my Mum with Mum and the two kids, Shadow loved lying in his favourite spot.  He would lie there for hours.

Here we are all dressed up again. Now that's a picture for you. Sandi, the little girl, had a great time with my dogs. She wasn't allowed one of her own so I was very fortunate and she would take the dogs for walks, give them baths, brush them, go on picnics with them, and as you see, dressed them up.

The winters are rather cool up here in Nova Scotia, so on the really cold days, Scampie would wear her sweater. As soon as I reached for the sweater, she knew she was going for a walk and started jumping around wanting to go for her walk.

Here is Scampie and her son and best friend, Shadow, after a trip to the beauty parlor.  Don't they look just like pampered poodles.  I guess they were.

At the age of twelve, Scampie started to feel the aches and pains of impending old age, but with natural herbs and having Shadow around to keep her active, she overcame most of the arthritic pain and "Scampered" around like a young dog.

When she was about fourteen, she became diabetic, and I faithfully gave her a needle every day for the next four years. I still can't believe I did that, but I knew it had to be done so I did it. As she grew older she began to lose her sight. She always covered up her lack of sight and it was hard to tell that she even had a problem.

At the ripe old age of eighteen, Scampie started to grow weak rather rapidly, and I was going to take her to the vet to see what could be done, but I came home one lunch hour and she was laying on the mat waiting for me to come home to be with her.  She just lay there with the head in my lap, with Shadow standing near, and crossed over the Bridge.  Shadow and I cried our hearts out that afternoon.  I still remember sitting in the chair holding Shadow and I swear he was crying with me, tear for tear.

Scampie had a long and wonderful life and gave me the most precious thing she could - her son, Shadow Please read Shadow's story.
